integration with red yeast rice has been shown to be effective in normalizing the levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

Technically substances that perform this inhibitory activity of this enzyme are defined as statins, and are classified as drugs that have activity in reducing cholesterol; in particular the monacolins are converted to a form called lovastatin, which is the first statin that was derived from pharmaceutical research.

Compared with the traditional dosage form of lovastatin, red yeast rice has a much lower dosage of monacolins and is classified, after a long legal battle, as a nutritional supplement.
