Technically substances that perform this inhibitory activity of this enzyme are defined as statins, and are classified as drugs that have activity in reducing cholesterol; in particular the monacolins are converted to a form called lovastatin, which is the first statin that was derived from pharmaceutical research. What's unique is that the lipid-lowering activity of red yeast rice is greater than that of lovastatin pharmaceutically prepared; a dose of fermented red rice has about 7 mg of lovastatin, while the compressed pharmaceutical doses of 10, 20 or 40 mg. It is still unclear the mechanism by which a dose of red yeast rice is more potent in lowering cholesterol to a higher dose of lovastatin pharmaceutically prepared, probably due to the activity of other substances contained therein.

The red yeast rice also has operations in lowering triglycerides.
In a study of 502 patients suffering from hyperlipidemia, a daily treatment with 600 mg 2 times a day for 4 weeks there was a reduction in total cholesterol by 22.7% and LDL cholesterol by 30.9%.
