Norwegian researchers are however cautious in interpreting the results. According to them, other factors, such as diet or socio-economic status of the subjects may have had an impact on the symptoms of depression.

Clinical trials are currently underway in North America on the effectiveness of omega-3 fish oil or cod liver oil to prevent or treat depression. These studies are particularly among teenagers, people with major depression and depression associated with multiple sclerosis.

Beware of vitamins

If used in the cod liver oil as a source of EPA and DHA, make sure not to continuously exceed the tolerable upper intake levels of vitamins A (3000 mcg or 10,000 IU per day) and D (50 mcg or 2000 IU per day). The cod liver oil supplements display their content of these two vitamins on the label.
