Previous research has shown that supplementation with fish oil had a protective effect on bronchoconstriction induced by exercise (EIB) in elite athletes, which could be put down to its anti-inflammatory properties.
Since IBE in asthma involves salting of proinflammatory mediators, it is possible that supplementation with fish oil may reduce the severity of EIB in asthmatic subjects.

Determine the efficacy of fish oil supplementation on the severity of EIB in asthmatic subjects.
- Study design :
Cross, randomized, double-blind.
- Part of the study :
Pulmonary function and exercise testing in a university research laboratory.
- Patients and measurements :
16 asthmatic patients with documented IBE were included in the study, first with a normal diet and with fish oil capsules containing 3.2 g eicosapentaenoic acid and 2.0 g of docohexaenoïque acid (oil diet fish, n = 8) or placebo capsules (placebo diet, n = 8), this daily for three weeks.
At the beginning of the study (normal operation) and at the end of each treatment phase was measured (in pre-exercise and post-exercise):
differential cell count percentage of induced sputum
= leukotriene metabolites concentrations C4 (LTC4), leukotriene E4 (LTE4), prostaglandin D2 (PGD2), cytokines (interleukin IL1béta and TNF-alpha,
metabolites eicosanoids leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and B5 (LTB5) from poly-morphonucléaires leukocytes (PMNLs).
- Results :
Under normal diet and placebo, subjects were presented IBE.
The fish oil diet improved pulmonary function to below the diagnostic threshold IBE with a reduction in the consumption of bronchodilators.
The percentage of induced sputum cell counts on and concentrations of LTC 4-LTE 4, PGD 2, IL-1beta and TNF-alpha were significantly reduced before and after exercise for the fish oil diet compared to normal diet and placebo diets.
There was a significant reduction of LTB4 and a significant increase in production by PMNLs LTB5 enabled for the fish oil diet compared to normal diet and placebo diets.
- Conclusion :
Our data suggest that fish oil supplementation may represent a potentially beneficial nonpharmacologic intervention for asthmatic subjects with IBE.
