History of Tribulus
top
The fruits of Tribulus have been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine (India) and Asian traditional medicine (China, Japan, Korea, etc.), mainly to treat infertility and sexual dysfunction in both men and women . In Europe, Tribulus has long been used to relieve hormonal deficiency. In China, it is believed to multiple other virtues. It is used, among others, mixed with other plants to treat urinary tract disorders, hypertension, coronary heart and to stimulate the production of breast milk diseases.

In the early 1980s, the public was interested in the fruit extract of Tribulus after learning that the Bulgarian Olympic lifters attributed her outstanding performance. Thereafter, the fame of the plant was further increased when manufacturers argued that the improved sexual performance . Tribulus extract is today in the list of ingredients of many products sold for this purpose.

The current trend of manufacturers of extracts of Tribulus is to standardize extracts 40% of saponins, which are the active ingredients of the fruit.

Research on tribulus

Uncertain effectiveness Improving sports performance. To promote the sale of their products based on Tribulus , manufacturers and distributors are advancing studies in Bulgaria in the early 1980s They have shown that tribulus increases levels various steroid hormones, including testosterone , DHEA and estrogen , which would have a positive effect on athletic performance. These studies, already old, have a relative value because of the methodologies used, which no longer correspond to current standards. In addition, two small-scale clinical studies published in 2000 did not confirm these data 1.2 . Finally, an Australian study published in 2008 concluded that tribulus had no effect or increase muscle strength, nor the loss of body fat, or the rate of testosterone in urine 3 . After five weeks of intensive training, the researchers did indeed observed no difference between the group taking 450 mg of extract of Tribulus per day and the one who took a placebo.

Uncertain effectiveness Sexual enhancement. Allegations that tribulus increases sexual performance are partly fueled by studies showing that extracts of Tribulus increase laboratory animal sex hormone levels (rats and rabbits) 7 and have effects positive about their sexual behavior 4-6 .

None of these effects have yet been observed in humans. Young healthy men took tribulus for 4 weeks without any hormonal change has been measured 8 . Comparable results were obtained in women. Urinalysis revealed no extensive effect on the production of testosterone and DHEA for two volunteers who took 1,500 mg of tribulus for 2 days 9 .

Traditional use Traditional uses. Results obtained in vitro or in animals suggest that tribulus or some of its compounds could play a role in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases 10-12 and hypertension 13 . However, convincing clinical data are missing for now. The only ones available are for 1990 and cover 473 patients with coronary heart disease. The authors of this study, the remission rate in patients treated with the extract of Tribulus was higher than that of 67 subjects in a control group treated with conventional medicine 14 . The methodological quality of this test is poor, partly because of the small number of subjects in the control group.

Furthermore, a recent experimental study would tend to validate the use made of ayurvedic medicine tribulus to treat kidney stones. Researchers have indeed managed to inhibit the formation in vitro oxalate crystals (a component of some calculations), using an extract of the plant 15 .
